Learning Outcome #3 – Active Reading

Active reading helped me better understand the texts that we read throughout the semester, even getting to a point where I wished I had learned about active reading earlier in my school career as it would have helped me immensely in high school.

I chose the first two active readings we did in the beginning of the semester as I believe they were both my best ones. Starting with the first active reading for Appiah’s Making Conversation, I underlined cosmopolitanism’s biggest foes Hiter and Stalin and stated that they were naturally enemies to this belief as it involves humanity being in one community. I also underlined regarding a question whether or not the Jewish prime minister has changed since Making Conversation was published.

I also liked active reading Gladwell’s essay as I feel like I was able to make more connections with his essay. I was able to connect Facebook warriors to Anti Vax Facebook groups and the fact that Twitter isn’t used everywhere. I also asked the question whether or not the fact that Facebook and sites like it give the US an advantage over terrorists.

Both of these active reading activities helped me understand the writing a lot more than if I had just read it normally, and I am thankful for learning about it.
